Feelin’ Pine with α-Pinene
In the first issue of the Fettle Flier, we talked broadly about terpenes: what they are, how they relate to the major cannabinoids THC and CBD, and how their presence can influence your experience with cannabis. As a refresher, terpenes are organic compounds that are produced naturally by most plants. The terpene profile of a cannabis strain influences its taste, aroma, and therapeutic benefits.
This time around, we’ll be talking about a specific terpene that’s aroma fills many homes this time of year. As you can probably infer from its name, α-pinene is primarily responsible for the distinctive scent of pine trees and other conifers. Aside from helping you get to into the holiday spirit, α-pinene has been demonstrated to have several effects that may be of use in the treatment of numerous medical conditions.
A number of studies have demonstrated α-pinene’s anti-inflammatory properties, suggesting that this terpene might have broad applications for the multitude of disorders and diseases with underlying inflammatory mechanisms.1 Among these, α-pinene may be especially promising for osteoarthritic conditions.2 Further studies show α-pinene’s usefulness for improving memory retention and combating the short-term memory loss that can accompany THC use.3 α-Pinene might also have uses for anxiety, pain, and even some bacterial infections.3,4
Interested in trying a product that’s high in α-pinene? Some strains that are particularly high in this terpene include Indicol GH from AGL, Fioraden C from CT Pharma, Sunlight from Curaleaf, and Tuplica from Theraplant.
